Overview

In gastroenterology, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder characterized by abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating relieved by defecation and alteration of bowel habits. Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI) or a stressful life event. Other functional or pain disorders and certain psychological conditions are more common in those with IBS.

Treatment for IBS can include dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important.

Several conditions may present as IBS including celiac disease, mild infections, several inflammatory bowel diseases, functional chronic constipation and chronic functional abdominal pain. In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, though the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gut, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system.

Diet and Eating Frequent Small Meals

While weight loss "experts" and medical practitioners are encouraging people to eat five to six small meals per day to lose weight and keep their metabolism high, scientific studies show much different results. According to studies done by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, eating small frequent meals did not cause participants to lose weight. A similar study was also done in Australia with similar results: You don't lose weight from eating frequent meals every day.

In addition to being a useless practice, the eating small frequent meals every day is also a destructive practice. The human stomach takes a total of four to five hours to digest a meal - sometimes longer depending on what is eaten. It then needs at least one hour to rest before being "revved" up again. When a person eats every three hours, the digestive process is actually interrupted, along with your fat-burning cycle, which occurs in the last stage of digestion. Insulin levels stay high in the body also - something that could eventually lead to insulin resistance.

Your stomach is a delicate organ that requires rest between meals. Eating frequent meals keeps it working all day and will eventually "wear out" your stomach and put a beating on your entire gastrointestinal tract as well. There is no wonder that there has been a sharp rise in digestive disorders such as heart burn, flatulence, bloating, low stomach acid, acid reflux disease, ulcers, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

It turns our parents were right all along - three meals a day and no snacking in between. Space your meals five hours apart for optimum digestion and weight loss!

Treating Acid Reflux Symptoms

Recognizing the potential symptoms of acid reflux disease at an early stage will allow you to cure it more easily and timely. You should focus on treating this disease on time. Medical experts have found out that a heart burn and acid regurgitation are the main symptoms of this disease. Try reaching out for expert medical help and follow the directions prescribed by your health care practitioner.

Here are some of the most common and effective forms of acid reflux treatment:

Acid reflux is a physiological disorder. It is known to result in regurgitation of the content of the stomach inside the oral cavity and esophagus. The disease usually occurs due to the enhanced abdominal pressure, bad eating habits, inappropriate diets or delay in the lower esophageal sphincter"s activity.

The patient may suffer from certain symptoms such as soreness, inflammation of the throat, heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, difficulty in breathing and soreness. The problem is common in people of almost all ages. The disease can result in serious complications in some cases.

The treatment of this disease usually involves medications. These medications focus on controlling the gastric acid production inside the stomach.

Antacids are the most common medications used when it comes to treating acid reflux. These medicines are also prescribed for ulcers and works towards providing temporary relief to the symptoms related to acid reflux.

Antacids have restricted action on the stomach. However, these are usually prescribed due to the safer effect. These are also easily available at any drug store near you. You don"t require any prescription to purchase these medicines.

There are also stronger versions of the medications prescribed to provide relief from the symptoms of acid reflux. These are as mentioned below:

- Pepcid

- Axid

- Tagamet

- Zantac

All the medications mentioned above work towards acting on the stomach cells blockage temporarily. The blockage usually results in production of pepsin and gastric acid inside the body. The medicines mentioned above can also be combined with antacids to provide greater impact and treating the disease more effectively.

Experts usually advice to rush to the medical help if there is no relief experienced via taking over the counter or non prescription medicines.

The disease can be effectively controlled via medication treatment in most of the cases. However, in certain special cases, the disease may also require surgery. Patients who require large doses of medicines in order to find relief from the symptoms usually need to undergo a surgery.

Sometimes reoccurrence of the disease is also possible after a long period of treatment via medications. In such cases, medical experts suggest a surgery. Here, the acid reflux surgery is the best alternative for treating the patients. This alternative can help in rectifying any of the physiological abnormalities associated with the disease, permanently.

The treatment of this disease basically involves enhancing the pressure at the level of the esophagus.

The treatment also works towards tightening the walls existing at the lower esophageal tract. It also reconstructs the sphincter of esophagus.

The surgery is a quick and extremely reliable source of treating acid reflux.

Unless you live in a cave, there's no doubt that you've heard of the amazing anti-aging breakthrough called Resveratrol. Resveratrol ads are popping up everywhere and it's been featured on 60 Minutes, Dr Oz & Oprah, Discovery Channel, ABC, CBS, Fox News, and MSNBC. In this article, you'll find the inside scoop about the effects of Resveratrol and tips on usage and how to purchase it.

Resveratrol is classified as a polyphenol and is naturally created by certain vines, pine trees, peanuts, grapes, and other plants. Polyphenols make up a wide variety of plant compounds. One of them, Polygonnum cuspidatum is used in various traditional Asian medicines which are prescribed for liver and heart conditions. Resveratrol activates the "longevity gene" (sirtuin SIR gene). Harvard Medical School has done extensive research on Resveratrol and says that it is "the biggest medical discovery since antibiotics!"

1) What Will Taking Resveratrol Do For Me?

Resveratrol has many effects on the body. Plants create Resveratrol to help protect from bad weather, disease, and poor growing conditions. The same natural defense system can be activated in humans.

Resveratrol helps us burn fat and lose weight by naturally increasing the metabolism. The antioxidant compounds in it work as food inhibitors to the upper intestine receptors. This makes your brain think that your stomach is full.

Resveratrol also prevents the proliferation of various cancer cell types. It has anti-inflammatory effects which stop the enzymes that encourage cancer cell growth. Also, it has a natural antioxidant that destroys cancer cells by attacking the mitochondria and arresting its ability to function properly.

The reduction of free-radical activity is also a major benefit of Resveratrol. It reduces cell degeneration, boosts your energy levels, relieves IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), reduces wrinkles, clears up acne, and much more!

2) Resveratrol Usage:

Resveratrol should be taken three times a day about twenty minutes before meals. This helps your body absorb the nutrients most efficiently. It can come in two different types of isomers: trans-Resveratrol and cis-Resveratrol. The "trans-Resveratrol" is the biologically active of the two and therefore is the only one you want to use for health benefits. When purchasing Resveratrol, make sure it is "trans-Resveratrol" to receive all the wonderful effects that people are raving about.
